Barcodes are foundational to supply chain efficiency, product traceability and ultimately to customer satisfaction. Box box stores are particularly vulnerable to inconsistent barcode quality from suppliers.  Supply chain and vendor compliance teams can be overwhelmed, ensuring that incoming products have scannable barcodes.

Standards are a Map, not the Journey

Big box companies have labeling standards that suppliers must comply with. Chargebacks and corrective actions for non-compliant shipments can help, but often it is a moving target. Seasonal inventory changes further complicate and pressure an already-intense situation. The retail establishment, including the big box store, is the last step in the supply chain.

Everyone has Challenges

Suppliers have their own issues with barcode quality and compliance. Some items are directly marked with the barcode—no package or label. Lumber is a particularly challenging example. Plastic parts such as electrical circuit breakers are another.

The supply chain is not a static “thing”; it’s a flow, a process, a sequence of events, linked and depending on each other. The barcode makes the supply chain work, it’s the connective tissue. Marking the product with its barcode is usually the final step after manufacturing. Naturally, but unfortunately, it is also the last thing anybody thinks about. An afterthought.

Consistently Inconsistent

Often, the enforcement of vendor standards for barcode quality and compliance is also an afterthought for the vendor. In the heat of the battle, sometimes the rules are neglected. Get the product shipped to the customer before it’s late—or later. Hope for the best that the barcodes work. The result is inconsistent barcode quality.

You Sometimes Get What You Enforce

From the standpoint of the retailer, you get what you enforce. Although it’s true, it can be a blunt instrument. From the supplier standpoint, sometimes they need more than enforcement. Sometimes they need help.

You Always Get What You Support

That’s where a third party can make an important difference. Our independence can be an asset for both the supplier as well as the retailer. We can resolve barcode problems and prevent future problems, and we can also clarify and, in some cases, correct a retailer’s supplier standards document.

Do What You Do Best

A trustworthy, reliable barcode quality and compliance testing bureau can help you do what you do best, and best of all, we’re not on your payroll.

3db Barcode Testimonial

Our company (an advanced software company) recently worked with Barcode Test to source a barcode verifier.  Not long ago, we were awarded a contract requiring products to be marked with IUIDs in accordance with MIL-STD-130.  For that standard, marking labels must pass a verification test that evaluates many variables (contrast, size, clarity, syntax, modularity, and more).  After a thorough search, we reduced our options to a select few.

In our search for a verifier, the Axicon line caught our attention.  Barcode Test is our regional reseller for this product.   From the beginning, they were very prompt with their responses.  We ended up having a quick call with John Nachtrieb to go over our needs.  John was extremely easy to work with and provided a lot of great information.  He was very knowledgeable on the matter and was quick to offer up a demo unit (free of charge).

Upon receiving the demo verifier and testing it, a few questions arose.  John joined a call with us and answered all our questions.  Ultimately, the Axicon verifier wasn’t the best fit for us, so we shipped the demo back.  John was completely understanding.  A few weeks later, Barcode Test reached back out with another possible verifier for us to try.  While they didn’t sell that brand, they just wanted to help us find the best option that met our needs. They even offered to send us the unit that they have in-house to see if it worked to our liking.

Barcode Test is truly a great company to work with.  Their service and willingness to help the customer are far beyond what you typically get from other companies.  They are experts in barcode quality assurance and seem willing to help in any way they can (even if that means not getting a sale and recommending another option that better fits the customer’s needs).  If anyone is in the market for barcode verification/scanning services or products, I would highly recommend giving Barcode Test a call.
