What is the best way to buy the right barcode verifier for your specific needs? Hint: Price is definitely an important consideration, but not the most important one. So what is the most important consideration? The answer depends on your business. Here are some priorities—not in any particular order:

Price is Important

 

  • Barcode types: do you deal with linear barcodes (parallel lines and spaces) exclusively, or do you encounter linear and 2D barcodes? There are verifiers that can handle both types, but if you only deal with linear barcodes, those verifiers are more cost-effective.
  • Industry applications: are all of the barcodes you deal with from one industry, such as automotive, defense or healthcare? Or do you encounter a wide range of applications? Some verifiers can only check a limited range of applications.
  • Does your team include people with deep experience and knowledge about barcodes, barcode quality, and compliance? If ongoing support might be needed, don’t buy from a company that only wants to sell and won’t (or cannot) offer support. That includes virtually all big online e-tailers.
  • Are your barcodes always printed on a label or a package or do you laser-etch them on bare metal? You can avoid having to buy two verifiers if you get one that can perform both functions.
  • Is your business (or customers) ISO certified? Not all verifiers are ISO compliant—do you really need that? You need a verifier to protect you from barcode chargebacks. The legal and reputational damage bad barcodes can inflict can be devastating. Only an ISO-certified verifier can protect you and prove your barcodes are compliant. Not all verifiers are ISO-compliant—and they are not cheaper than those that are. The most expensive barcode verifier on the market is still less expensive than a chargeback.

Our company (an advanced software company) recently worked with Barcode Test to source a barcode verifier.  Not long ago, we were awarded a contract requiring products to be marked with IUIDs in accordance with MIL-STD-130.  For that standard, marking labels must pass a verification test that evaluates many variables (contrast, size, clarity, syntax, modularity, and more).  After a thorough search, we reduced our options to a select few.
