George Laurer, Inventor of the UPC has died at 94

University of Maryland alumnus and inventor of the Universal Product Code, George Laurer, has died. His funeral was held on Monday, December 9 .

Mr. Laurer was an electrical engineer at IBM at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina in the early ’70’s.

He invented the UPC to help grocery stores combat the cost of hand-labeling shelf items.
